Oral Submucous Fibrosis
Oral Submucous fibrosis (O-SMF) is a chronic condition of the oral cavity characterized by inflammation and progressive fibrosis of the submucous tissues. O-SMF results in marked rigidity and an eventual inability to open the mouth. The buccal mucosa is the most commonly involved site, but any part of oral cavity can be involved, even the phanynx.
Causes
Products such as Paan Masala and Guthka appear to cause the disease because of higher amounts of areca nut.
Other causes include –
- Immunological diseases
- Extreme Climatic Conditions
- Prolonged defiency of Iron and Vitamins in diet
Symptoms
Initally the mucosa feels leathery with hard bands. In the advanced stage the oral mucosa looses its softness and becomes white and stiff.
Other features are –
- Difficulty in mouth opening and protusion of tongue
- Pain in the ear or deafness
- Restriction of the movement of the soft palate
- A bud like shrunken uvala
- Pigmentation of the oral mucosa
- Dryness of the mouth
